Wire Damascus

We can divide Damascus into two big groups: Pattern Damascus, which is made by folding over two or more kinds of iron material; and Damascus that is made directly from wasted material such as wire or chain.

In making Pattern Damascus, you can control patterns by artificial processing such as scraping, twisting, or melting different kinds of patterns together. In doing that, each maker can display his/her own individuality and technique. In contrast, Wire Damascus changes its figure depending on the quality and the size of the raw material. They can't tell its pattern until it is almost finished. Therefore, there is a certain element of risk involved. I obtained a Wire Damascus knife in bartering before. Its scale-like pattern displayed strong uniqueness although it was rather reserved and hazy looking, and I fell in love with it immediately. What I liked the most about it was its sharpness, which I found out about when I used it.

I used the knife to death at camping in the mountains behind my home, and I was amazed at its never failing sharpness. Dave later explained the reason to me as follows: If you look at the edge of Wire Damascus knife by microscope, you will see the detailed notches which were created in its formation. That's why its sharpness in cutting something soft like meat will last forever. I understood well.

Dave started his knife making in 1988. When he was collecting knives, he started desiring the knife he himself makes. Especially, he was in love with the Damascus blade, and he was hoping that sometime in the future he would surely make his own.

He said, "The more you beat it, the Damascus's charm will become deepened. Certainly, it is difficult. But I always have a feeling of accomplishment in controlling iron, thinking next time I'll bring a change here or there."
